ACRYLICS Alda Plastics use acrylic plastics / plastic glass / Perspex and Plexiglas for boat windows, boat hatches, stowage for glassware etc., point of sale displays i.e. leaflet holders, museum display cases, and machine guards. There are many processes involved in manufcaturing goods in acrylic. The real name for acrylic plastic is polymethyl methacrylate and it is thermoplastic. Plexiglas and perspex are just a few brand names for acrylic sheet which is a clear, transparent thermoplastic synthetic resin. Gluing of acrylics are processes used in manufacture e.g. machine guards, wave tanks etc. Plastic bending, e.g. line bending creates tight bends on acrylic sheets. Characteristics of 'acrylic' the material / acrylic plastic include that it is half the weight of glass, can be resistant to impact, it is not affected by salt or spray (hence it is good for boat windows and hatches), and has a temperature range of -40° to +50°c for continuous use. Plexiglas was the first acrylic to become impact-modified, and was a cross between standard acrylic and polycarbonate. |
